In my previous article on Yin Yoga, I described it as a gentle style of yoga that works deeply on connective tissue, joints, and the nervous system. Restorative Yoga takes this one step further in softness and relaxation. While Yin Yoga can sometimes create mild intensity, physical sensations, or discomfort in the poses, Restorative Yoga is fully focused on rest and recovery. In fact, Restorative Yoga can sometimes feel even more relaxing than a nap, like pressing the reset button for your body and mind.
The Origins of Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga is an ultra-gentle, soothing practice in which the body is fully supported with props such as bolsters, blankets, blocks, chairs, and eye pillows. This allows you to remain comfortably in a pose for longer periods without using muscle strength, allowing your body to truly rest. Restorative Yoga is based on the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, known for his precise and therapeutic approach to yoga. Iyengar emphasised the use of props to make poses accessible, so that every practitioner, regardless of experience or physical condition, can fully experience the benefits of a posture. From this tradition, one of his students, Judith Lasater, developed Restorative Yoga into a style that calms the nervous system, supports the body’s recovery, and allows for deep relaxation.
What Happens During Restorative Yoga?
The poses are often softer and gentler variations of classic yoga postures. With the support of props, the body can fully relax and remain effortlessly in a posture. Poses are held longer than in Yin Yoga, often 7 to 15 minutes per posture, allowing the body to fully surrender to rest. Because Restorative Yoga is focused on releasing tension, the emphasis is not on stretching but on comfort, support, gentleness, and relaxation. Poses are often arranged so that the head is at or slightly below heart level, which can help promote relaxation and even support a gentle, natural lowering of blood pressure. In this state of comfort and safety, the parasympathetic nervous system is activated, the part of the nervous system that supports recovery, rest, and balance. This helps the body return to a natural state of equilibrium, also known as homeostasis.
When Can Restorative Yoga Help?
Restorative Yoga is especially suitable for times when you need recovery and rest, for example, if you:
- Feel tired or overstimulated
- Are experiencing stress or a busy period
- Are recovering from illness or injury
- Find it difficult to truly relax
- Need to recharge
Because the poses are fully supported, Restorative Yoga is accessible to almost everyone, regardless of yoga experience.
The Difference Between Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga
Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga are both considered calm and meditative forms of yoga, but they have different goals and experiences. In Yin Yoga, light stress is applied to the body’s connective tissue, such as fascia, ligaments, and joints, to stimulate it slowly. Poses are held for several minutes so that the deeper structures are gently worked on. During Yin Yoga, you may feel noticeable sensations or mild intensity in a pose. Props, such as blocks or a bolster, can be used to support the body or make the pose safer with specific injuries or conditions, but they are not always required.
Restorative Yoga, on the other hand, has a different goal: that of complete relaxation. Poses are always fully supported with many props so that the body experiences no tension or stress. The aim is not to feel a stretch, but to give the body the opportunity to fully rest and recover.
While both Yin Yoga and Restorative Yoga contribute to relaxation, their effects and experiences are somewhat different. Yin Yoga stimulates connective tissue and may produce mild intensity or sensations while also supporting a sense of calm. Restorative Yoga is fully focused on comfort and relaxation, allowing the body to effortlessly surrender to recovery and deep rest, supported by the parasympathetic nervous system. Both are wonderful, gentle forms of yoga worth exploring if you are looking for more calm and balance in your busy life.
